Translation, draft. Review still pending.
Last updated: 3 October 2026
NachrichtenKlar is deliberately built to collect as little data as possible: there are no user accounts, no tracking and no ads. Your usage data (briefings read, reading progress, saved items, settings) stays on your device.
This privacy policy covers the NachrichtenKlar app. For this website, the website privacy policy applies.

2. Data on your device
Local storage
The app stores content and settings only locally on your device (SwiftData/device storage). This includes processed briefings, reading progress, bookmarks, your choice of categories and topics, your chosen translation language, the counters for trial features and, if you enter it, your first name for the greeting. The widgets read this data through a shared storage area on the same device. The app does not transfer this data to us or to third parties. If you delete the app, the data is removed.
Notifications
The optional daily reminder is a local notification scheduled on your device. No data is transferred to us or to Apple for this. You can turn it off in the settings at any time.
Read-aloud
The read-aloud feature uses the iOS speech output on your device. The text being read is not transferred to us.
3. Connection to our server
Hosting of the app backend
The app loads its content from our own server. It runs as a Cloudflare Worker on the infrastructure of our service provider Cloudflare, Inc. (USA). For technical reasons, Cloudflare processes your device’s IP address in order to establish the connection (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR – provision of the service). Our server does not analyse or store the IP address. Because Cloudflare is based in the USA, processing outside the European Union cannot be ruled out.
Retrieving content
The briefings, topic lists, weekly review and the Sunday audio briefing are identical for all users (broadcast principle). No personal data about you is transmitted when they are retrieved. For technical protection, the app only sends an app identifier (bundle ID). It is the same for all users and does not relate to you personally.
Random device identifier
For some features, the app creates a random identifier (UUID). It is created on your device the first time it is needed and stored in the app’s settings (UserDefaults). It is not linked to your Apple ID, your name or any other device characteristics. If you delete and reinstall the app, a new identifier is created.
The app sends the identifier (as the HTTP header “X-Device-Id”) only with these requests:
- viewing a poll and voting (section 5),
- translating a story (section 4),
- follow-up questions on a story (section 4).
Purpose: for translation and follow-up questions, the identifier ensures that a single device cannot use up the limited daily quotas on its own. To do this, the server counts requests per identifier and day. These counters are deleted automatically after about 25 hours. For polls, the identifier ensures that each device votes only once. For trial features (without Premium), the app also sends a flag saying that the request is a trial, so the server can assign it to a separate quota.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest is to provide these features reliably for all readers and to prevent abuse. The identifier is not used for advertising, tracking or profiling and is not combined with any other data about you.
4. AI features and content creation
Creating the briefings
To create the briefings, our server uses third-party services: GNews for collecting news, Anthropic for rewriting the text and ElevenLabs for the Sunday audio briefing. These services process only public news content, no personal data about app users. The app downloads the Sunday briefing audio file from our server, not from ElevenLabs.
Deep dive
When you open a deep dive, the app sends the story’s identifier along with its headline, summary, background, category and source link to our server. This is public content from the briefing, not data about you. The device identifier is not sent. The server has Anthropic create the deep dive and caches it for up to 30 days for all readers.
Translation
When you translate a story, the app sends only the story’s identifier, the chosen language and the device identifier. The server takes the text of the story from its own data and has Anthropic translate it. No text entered by you is transmitted. Translations are cached per story and language for up to 30 days for all readers, without any link to your device identifier.
Follow-up questions
With “Nachfragen” (follow-up questions) you can ask one of a set of predefined questions about a story, for example “explain it more simply”. There is no free text input. The app sends only the story’s identifier, the chosen question and the device identifier. Anthropic writes the answer based on the text of the story; it is cached for up to 30 days for all readers, without any link to your device identifier. This feature is not always offered. When it is switched off, it does not appear in the app.
Anthropic
Anthropic receives only public news content and our instructions from our server. Your device identifier, your IP address and any other data about you are not passed on to Anthropic.
5. Polls
From time to time, the app asks what should be worked on next. When the poll is displayed, the server only checks whether a vote already exists for your device identifier; nothing is stored. When you vote, the server stores your device identifier together with the chosen answer, so that each device can vote only once. Only the number of votes per answer is evaluated. No automatic deletion period is set for these entries; we delete them once the poll in question has closed and been evaluated. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.
6. Subscriptions (Apple)
The Premium subscription is handled exclusively through Apple’s in-app purchase system (App Store / StoreKit). This also applies to redeeming codes and restoring purchases. Apple is the contractual partner for payment. We do not receive any payment or account data. Whether a valid subscription exists is checked by the app on your device via Apple; our server does not store any subscription status. Apple’s privacy policy applies.
7. Links and contact
Links to sources
Every story links to its original source. If you tap the link, the provider’s page opens in your browser. That provider’s privacy policy applies there.
Contact by email
If you write to us, for example via “Fehler im Briefing melden” (report an error in a briefing), “Bug melden” (report a bug) or “Support kontaktieren” (contact support), your mail app opens with a prepared text. Depending on the feature, it contains the headline and source of the briefing, the app version, the iOS version and the device type (for example “iPhone”). You can see everything before sending and can change or delete it. We use your email address and the content of your message only to handle your request (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and delete them once they are no longer needed for that purpose, unless statutory retention obligations apply.
8. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21). Please contact us at the email address above. Since we do not store any data about you other than the random device identifier, and this identifier does not allow any conclusions about who you are, we are usually unable to link any data to you (Art. 11 GDPR).
9. Right to lodge a complaint
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), in particular in the member state of your habitual residence or of the place of the alleged infringement. The authority responsible for us is:
